The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Doctoral Researcher (Biomedical Informatics) position in Kuopio. The position will be filled for a two-year term from 1 November 2023 onwards (or as agreed). Please find more information below and submit your application by 4 September 2023.

Role and salary

As our new Doctoral Researcher in Biomedical Informatics, you will be working in the research group led by Associate Professor and Academy Research Fellow Vittorio Fortino in the Institute of Biomedicine, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Kuopio Campus.

The Biomedical Informatics Group aims to develop machine learning-based applications to address biomedical research questions, including biomarker and drug discovery. We encourage applicants with expertise in R/Python programming, machine learning, network analysis, and fundamental knowledge in genomics and transcriptomics data analysis to apply.

The candidate will work on a project funded by Sigrid Jusélius Foundation. The position is part of a project aiming to identify new therapeutic options for specific groups of cancer patients by using omics data and drug repositioning approaches. We will analyse multi-omics data, such as genomics and transcriptomics, to identify potential biomarkers and drug targets for distinct patient groups based on their shared biological or clinical characteristics. Then, we will use drug repositioning methods to identify FDA-approved drugs that could be effective in treating these patients.

The successful candidate will have an MSc in Bioinformatics, Biosciences or some other discipline relevant to the Doctoral Researcher position (has completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies).

The candidate shall also be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Eastern Finland by enrolling in one of the doctoral programmes of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

We do not expect the candidate to have prior knowledge of machine learning and network data mining algorithms, as these will be learned in the position. However, the candidate should have a strong foundation in coding and be comfortable with the idea that the primary duties of this role will be coding and learning machine learning techniques.

The position will be filled for a two-year term from 1 June 2023 onwards (or as agreed) due to it pertaining to a specific project tasks. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system for the Finnish universities.
